This fast-paced course is designed for artists who feel stuck in a “stiff” or overly illustrative style. By merging rapid, time-constrained drawing with the rich, unpredictable textures of immediate transfer printing (like kitchen-foil lithography or gelli-plate printing), you learn to build complex, layered visual mythologies.
Hybrid Totems (Fast-Paced Drawing & Layered Prints)
- Focus: Breaking out of a stiff, strict drawing style by using rapid timers and custom stamps.
- What you’ll do: Do high-speed “lightning round” drawing drills (from 5 minutes down to 5 seconds) to strip away overthinking. You will layer these drawings over colorful backgrounds and design your own personal symbols using handmade stamps.
- Duration: 4 weeks (3 hours per week)
- Cost: includes gelli printing plates, oil crayons, and fine pens
Weekly Breakdown:
- Week 1: Chrono-Drawing Relay
Draw a single object over multiple timed intervals—starting at 5 minutes, dropping to 1 minute, then 30 seconds, and finally a 5-second blind contour. The hyper-compressed time frames force the brain to discard unnecessary detail and isolate the absolute essence of the form. - Week 2: Trace-Litho Layering
Utilizing simple, transsfer and resistance methods these immediate, raw line drawings are layered directly on top of previous acrylic or watercolor washe layers. - Week 3: The Lexicon Matrix
Create a grid of 20 miniature squares. In each square, invent a personal symbol, texture, or pattern using a combination of materials. - Week 4: Pick your three favorite symbols from your grid and layer them into a final series of three finished prints.
Finding Your Style Focus
The Motif Synthesis: At the end of the course, analyze your matrices and trace-layers to find recurring visual motifs. They pick three “signature marks” that felt the most effortless to produce and use them as the structural foundation for a final, cohesive series of hybrid prints.
