ABOUT THE RE-CLUB

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

RE-CLUB DEFINITIONS

To use discarded material again instead of simply dumping it into a landfill.

To adapt or use discarded material for a different purpose instead of simply dumping it into a landfill.

To use discarded or no longer-needed material again / more than once instead of simply dumping it into a landfill.

The act of completely immersing yourself in, or diving into creativity or being creative.

A product life cycle is an assessment of resource consumption, performance, and environmental impacts at each phase of an industrial product’s life. It consists of the extraction of raw materials, the processing of those materials, manufacturing, shipping, use, maintenance, and finally disposal or recycling.

The process of designing through making is distinguished by a particularly creative approach in which both designing and making activities are fully integrated and intrinsic to each other.

Includes the stages of brainstorming, material exploration, design, prototype development, production processes, costing, branding & packaging, marketing & sales.

Brainstorming provides multiple and diverse perspectives, helps avoid biases toward any particular viewpoint, generates multiple ideas in a short period of time, creates opportunities to explore each other’s ideas and builds up camaraderie, and forsters a sense of buy-in.

Improv games encourage creativity, quick thinking, and communication skills and are great tools for breaking the ice, having fun, and building team spirit. They are great at breaking down barriers to collaboration and getting groups prepared for more involved tasks and processes.

Sketching and mind-mapping foster effective problem-solving, increased productivity, improved communication skills, greater recall and understanding, enhances learning and creativity, simplify complex ideas, improves presentations, and better critical thinking skills.

Project journalling helps participants think about their project from different angles, clarity comes with writing, helps solve problems, plans the next steps, identifies the lessons learned, helps with personal growth, and raises questions not otherwise considered.

Entrepreneur: “A person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money.” This is the Merriam-Webster definition open_in_new of the word “entrepreneur.” But it’s so much more than that, isn’t it? It’s about passion. It’s about recognizing opportunities and generating innovative, creative ideas.

ENVIRONMENTAL

THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Recycled and upcycled products offer a treasure trove of environmental benefits, making them a fantastic choice for a more sustainable lifestyle. Here are some of the key advantages:

REDUCED LANDFILLS

Both recycling and upcycling divert materials from landfills, which have numerous drawbacks. Landfills take up valuable space, pollute surrounding air and water, and emit greenhouse gases through decomposition. By giving materials a second life, we minimize landfill growth and its associated environmental concerns.

CONSERVED RESOURCES

Producing new products requires extracting and processing fresh raw materials, putting a strain on natural resources like wood, water, and minerals. Recycled and upcycled goods significantly reduce this demand, preserving precious resources for future generations. Additionally, less extraction translates to less deforestation, habitat destruction, and pollution from mining and processing activities.

LOWERED ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Manufacturing new products typically involves energy-intensive processes like melting, refining, and shaping materials. Recycled and upcycled goods often require less energy to transform, leading to a smaller carbon footprint and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. This directly contributes to combating climate change.

POLLUTION PREVENTION

Extracting and processing raw materials often generates air and water pollution. Recycling and upcycling minimize this pollution by relying on existing materials, thereby safeguarding public health and protecting ecosystems.

WASTE REDUCTION

Both these practices directly reduce waste generation. Recycling converts waste materials into new resources, while upcycling gives them a whole new purpose as different products. This not only minimizes the environmental impact of dealing with waste but also conserves valuable resources used in disposal processes like incineration.

INCREASED BIODIVERSITY

By preserving resources and reducing pollution, recycled and upcycled products indirectly contribute to protecting biodiversity. Healthy ecosystems rely on clean air, water, and natural resources, all of which benefit from these sustainable practices.

BONUS BENEFITS

Beyond the environmental advantages, recycled and upcycled products often boast economic benefits, creating jobs in the recycling and upcycling industries. Additionally, they can foster creativity and inspire a more mindful approach to consumption.

So, choosing recycled and upcycled products is a significant step towards a greener future. By embracing these sustainable practices, we can conserve resources, reduce pollution, and create a healthier planet for all.

Remember, every little bit counts! Even small changes in your consumption habits can make a big difference. Happy sustainable living!

THERAPEUTIC

THE THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS

Research has shown that crafting, regardless of the medium you use, has a host of therapeutic benefits. Crafting creates a situation very similar to that of meditation.  When engaged in a craft, you are focusing on the here and now.  In those moments, time stands still.  You are able to forget the stressors of day-to-day life and be part of something completely separate. In addition, crafting stimulates the production of dopamine, the “feel good” neurotransmitter, that is responsible for pleasure and enjoyment.  Group art sessions have also been found to help improve levels of feeling connected and increase social interactions between participants.
