FINE ART PRINT COLLECTIONS

Fine art prints aren’t just beautiful additions to your space; they’re potential investments and cherished pieces to be enjoyed for years to come. But like any valuable possession, proper care is essential to ensure their longevity and preserve their vibrancy. Here’s a guide to ensure your fine art prints stay looking their best for generations:

MINIMIZE LIGHT EXPOSURE

Light, especially direct sunlight, is one of the biggest threats to your fine art prints. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight can cause fading over time, making your once vibrant colors appear dull and lifeless. Here’s what you can do:

  • STRATEGIC PLACEMENT | Hang your prints away from windows or areas with excessive sunlight. Opt for north-facing walls or rotate your artwork periodically to minimize sun exposure.
  • EMBRACE THE POWER OF GLASS  | Invest in frames with UV-protective glass. This filtering layer shields your prints from harmful UV rays while still allowing you to appreciate their beauty.

LOCATION CHOOSE THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT

Just like Goldilocks and her porridge, your fine art prints have a sweet spot when it comes to their environment. Here are some factors to consider:

  • HUMIDITY MATTERS |  Avoid hanging your prints in areas with high humidity, like bathrooms or kitchens. Excess moisture can cause warping, wrinkling, or even mold growth. Aim for a cool, dry environment with moderate humidity levels.
  • TEMPERATURE EXTREMES Fluctuations in temperature can also damage your prints. Avoid hanging them near fireplaces, radiators, or vents where they might be exposed to excessive heat.

PROPER FRAMING ESSENTIALS

The frame you choose for your fine art print isn’t just about aesthetics; it plays a vital role in its preservation. Here’s what to look for:

  • ACID-FREE IS THE WAY TO BE | Ensure your frame uses acid-free mats and backing materials. Regular cardboard can emit harmful gases that can damage your print over time.
  • GLASS WITH CLASS | As mentioned earlier, opt for UV-protective glass to shield your artwork from light damage.

HANDLE WITH CARE

Our hands harbor natural oils that can stain or damage your prints. Here’s how to handle them with care:

  • WASH YOUR HANDS | Before touching your prints, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them completely.
  • GRIP IT RIGHT |  Avoid touching the printed surface directly. Hold the print by the edges or use cotton gloves for added protection.

SAFEKEEPING

If you’re not currently displaying a print, proper storage is crucial. Here are some tips:

  • FLATTEN OUT |  Store your prints flat in an acid-free folder or archival box. This prevents curling or bending that can damage the paper.
  • COOL AND DRY IS THE MOTTO | Choose a cool, dry location for storage. Avoid basements, attics, or garages where temperature and humidity fluctuations can be extreme.

BONUS TIP | For particularly valuable or delicate prints, consider consulting a professional conservator. They can offer expert advice on framing, storage, and even restoration if necessary.

By following these simple yet effective care tips, you can ensure your fine art prints continue to be a source of beauty and inspiration for you and generations to come. Remember, a little care goes a long way in preserving these treasured pieces of art.
